Bazaar Al Rimmad

A Custom Magic: the Gathering set by Martin Gallogly

A thriving port city on the Darogi Gulf. Al Rimmad is a haven for everything and everyone, if they’ve the coin to spend there. Through narrow alleys and crowded markets, the likes of merchants and smithies, bankers and swindlers converge on the sun-baked streets of Al Rimmad. On the wharf a swarm of buzzards tear at an overturned fruit cart, unconcerned with the sailors heckling passerby.

Outside the ancient city, a far-off fortress dominates the horizon of dunes. Shrouded in the desert’s shimmering waves of heat, it calls forth one word: Power. Caravans dot the landscape between oases, their low flood plains lined with thickets of reeds. Farmhands and laborers work the land, watched by a lone rider patrolling the road. His armor is hidden under the folds of his hood. His cloak bears an emblem and a phrase: “Yurgo is watching”.

Bazaar Al Rimmad is a custom set of Magic: The Gathering cards created by me to draft in my personal play group. The set draws on the influences of Arabian and Persian folklore, creating a mystical and hazy setting. This influence is also deeply embedded in the game play, with mechanics that draw on the themes of hazy heat reflections and ancient magic. The set is created strictly for limited formats, so the cards are not designed in the context of any Standard or Eternal formats of Magic.

Note: There are a few reprints in the set, which I felt were excellent fits either because of the mechanics they used or the flavor they exhibit.

Set Mechanics

  • Rebound
    • I find this to be an interesting and underutilized mechanic. It that allows players to recast an instant or sorcery at the beginning of their next upkeep, which I drew in parallel to the reverberating waves of heat off the dunes of the Waste.
  • Echo
    • Similar to Rebound, I feel that Echo has a lot more to offer than what we have seen from it. The mechanic feels very at home in an arid setting, where the resources are scarce and many of the magic entities require debts to be repaid.
  • Shimmer
    • Many creatures of the desert have assimilated its magic as their own, weaving in and out of the shimmering heat of the dunes. Shimmer is a creature ability that adds Shimmer a counter to the creature if it did not attack or block that turn, and requires that the counter be removed when that creature attacks or blocks. These creatures generally have a triggered ability based on removal of a shimmer counter.
  • Landmarks
    • An ancient and storied land, the Darogi Gulf is home to many landmarks large and small. This new artifact subtype functions similarly to Vehicles, in that they require creatures of a certain total power to staff them. Unlike Vehicles, Landmarks’ staff abilities are more akin to traditional activated abilities of artifacts or creatures.

Set Themes

  • Food
    • In a place like Al Rimmad, gathering for meals is a way of life. Mechanically, Food tokens support several themes in the set, including life gain matters and token matters themes. They also serve as a check against the aggressive archetypes which can leverage above-rate creatures thanks to the Echo mechanic.
  • Coins
    • Coin tokens represent the commerce that flows along the trade routes of the Darogi Gulf and streets of Al Rimmad. They are token artifacts that are sacrificed to create colorless mana. While treasure tokens already exist in this design space, I felt the inclusion of treasures would be too disruptive to the color balance of the set, opting instead for a colorless mana producer instead.
  • Tokens
    • The use of a broad tokens theme helps pull together several archetypes, which allows for a broader range of synergies among colors and decks. This theme cares about either having, sacrificing, or paying for costs by using tokens.
  • Life gain/loss
    • The magic of the Waste requires payment, often in the form of life. This concept is taken quite literally in this set, and the life gain/loss theme is built to take advantage of such situations. This theme plays well with aggressive strategies that are unafraid to race with their opponents, and more midrange or grindy strategies that can wear down the opposition after gaining lots of life.
