Putting community first: Larry Warner ’97, MPH ’13, DrPH
The health equity advocate and mentor has been honored with the School of Public Health’s 2025 Alumni Impact Award for his service to Rhode Island’s communities.
Before he came to Rhode Island, Larry Warner ’97, MPH’13, DrPH spent his formative years in Brooklyn, where his mother worked as a home health aide. “I was one of the New Yorkers who could not point to Rhode Island on a map,” he laughs.
It was from his mother’s example that he gained a strong sense of service to those around him. It was his academic excellence that earned him a place at the Packer Collegiate Institute, a prep school in Brooklyn. While at Packer, Warner says he connected with alumni who recommended he look at Brown when choosing where to apply to college. He says the suggestion took him by surprise.

Pushed to the Margins: The Human Cost of a Growing Housing Crisis
What is the cost of homelessness in Rhode Island? Do we measure it in dollars, hours, square footage? Or is it measured by sleepless nights, persistent coughs, uncertain futures? The reasons Rhode Islanders remain unhoused are varied, but the results are the same: marginalization and the fight to keep a stable footing.
Over the past several years, Rhode Island has seen a rapidly growing population of people living outdoors. According to data from the Rhode Island Coalition to End Homelessness, the number of people experiencing homelessness in RI has more than doubled since 2020. At the same time, median home prices in the Ocean State have hit record highs, and the average monthly rent for a two-bedroom apartment in the state has exceeded $2,000, making at least one-third of Rhode Island households cost-burdened.

EXT. BALCONY - NIGHT
Long shadows blanket the courtyard below. Several FIGURES overlook the courtyard, their silhouettes black against the lantern light of the surrounding balconies. One of the figures, a SMALL MAN, gestures with his knife across to another balcony.
KINGFISHER
How are we supposed to get in there? The
place is a rat’s nest. More traps than
my father’s kitchen.
